This is Chapter One of a multi-year project by siblings Rufus MK Nicoll and Laura K. Nicoll, combining historical research, video collage, dance, and a desire to come together to make live art across Maine during the times we find ourselves most often in––between election cycles.

This is a performance that is made in a week, built in and inspired by the ballroom in Mechanics Hall. The script was assembled by transcribing recordings of interviews with Margaret Chase Smith by Angus King, John Greenman, and Patsy Wiggins and recombining the text. A recording of this text provides the bulk of the soundtrack for performers to move to.

There will be time at the performance and during Open Studio hours Sunday, November 6 11am–2pm to learn more about the process and provide feedback.

Conceived & assembled by Rufus MK Nicoll

Choreographed & produced by Laura K. Nicoll

Performed by: Janoah Bailin, Sharoan Cohen, Rachel Jane Henry, Yuki Kawahisa, Annie Kloppenberg, Matt Korahais, Laura K. Nicoll and Rufus MK Nicoll.

Presented in partnership with Mechanics Hall. Support is provided by the American Rescue Plan Maine Project Grants, a subgranting program administered by SPACE Gallery for the National Endowment for the Arts.
