Our ballroom transforms into a jazz sanctuary with Vardan Ovsepian and his unforgettable Spiderweb Project:
“Vardan Ovsepian’s Spiderweb Project emphasizes the choices and actions we make, sending vibrations through the wider web, affecting others, and shaping our own reality. What you weave today becomes the foundation for your life tomorrow.”
Ovsepian blends classical refinement with fearless jazz improvisation, weaving melodies that ripple outward like a living web. The artist is joined by Vinicius Gomes (guitar), Joshua Davis (bass), and Austin McMahon (drums).
Peter Erskine writes, “Vardan brings his own sound and ingredients… I have never heard any musician quite like him in terms of harmonic awareness and melodic power. I suspect that he will prove to be quite a sensation…”
Presented by Mechanics’ Hall, the Armenian Cultural Association of Maine, & the Portland Conservatory of Music.
Thursday, April 2 at 7:00 PM (doors 6:30 PM). $15 for Mechanics’ Hall Members, $20 for general admission. There is a $5 surcharge on the day of the show. No one turned away for lack of funds.

A dance about dances about love.
Interested in the human impulse for connection, BABYBABYBABY taps into feelings of budding romance, when falling in love is silly and fast and sexy and devastating, and you are brilliant and stupid and spellbound.
With reference points ranging from early aughts romantic comedies and So You Think You Can Dance duets, to archival footage of live performances by Roberta Flack and Nina Simone, to obstacle course TV game shows and clowning, the work stumbles through shades of silliness, irrationality, passion, and grief, calling into question the role of sincerity, earnesty, and truthfulness in performance, and the power of physical states.
BABYBABYBABY seeks to explore how we contend with trust, impulsivity, and continuity via malleable agreements and disagreements, in its physical acts and in its overarching theme.
Saturday, April 11, at 7:00 PM (doors 6:30 PM) & Sunday, April 12, at 3:00 PM (doors 2:30 PM). All are welcome. There will be a rom-com artist reception with libations and platonic speed dating in the library immediately following the performance on April 11.

Event Details
“An unflinching look at private worlds of pain and a forceful denunciation of America’s for-profit healthcare system.” — Publishers Weekly
“When twenty-seven-year-old Laura Mauldin moved to New York for graduate school, she fell headlong into love. But just months into the relationship, her partner’s leukemia returned—and in a country without adequate systems for long-term care, Laura found herself quietly and devastatingly transformed from romantic partner to unpaid, full-time caregiver, fighting to keep the woman she loved alive in a system designed to let them both fall through the cracks.
Now a sociologist and professor of disability studies, Dr. Mauldin turns her private pain into a searing public investigation. To better understand her own experience, she speaks with couples across the country navigating the brutal, lonely fallout of chronic illness and disability. These are heartbreaking stories of love under strain — relationships full of extraordinary intimacy and resilience, but pushed to the edge by an ableist society that would rather look away from its most vulnerable citizens. At the heart of this investigation is a profound series of questions: What if love isn’t enough? What if our most cherished romantic ideals—commitment, sacrifice, “in sickness and in health” — have been weaponized to excuse the state from its responsibilities? And what happens to love when we ask it to do the work of an entire broken system?
Urgent, unflinching, and full of grace, In Sickness and In Health is a rallying cry for a radical reimagining of care—not as an individual act of devotion, but as a collective responsibility. In connecting the care crisis to the politics of love and intimacy, Mauldin reframes the conversation, urging us to build a world where no one is left to do the work of love alone.”

Dancing Home explores themes of heritage, belonging, displacement, and resilience through the lens of dance. At the heart of this program is Kareem Roustom’s ḥawwāsh, commissioned by Palaver in 2024.
Inspired by the ḥawwāsh, or lead dancer of a traditional dabke dance, this piece features fluid rotating leadership and virtuosic solos for every instrument. This program also features Argentinian tango, Syrian folk melodies, Croatian round dances, and custom arrangements by Palaver musicians Maya French and Lysander Jaffe. Dancing Home celebrates social dance as a meeting place for tradition and innovation, and a vehicle for building resilience, joy, and trust.

Choro Louco performs the enormously appealing Brazilian music genre known as choro. The band was formed in 2013 by a group of accomplished musicians who have all established themselves as virtuosos in other genres – ranging from classical music and jazz, to Celtic, klezmer, and Middle Eastern music. They love sharing their enthusiasm for this wonderful music genre.
The band members are Carl Dimow (guitar, flute, bass flute), Nicole Rabata (flute), David Newsam (7-string guitar, mandolin) and Eric LaPerna (pandeiro, bongos).
Choro originated in Brazil in the early 20th century. Its beautiful melodies, complex harmonies, and syncopated rhythms combine elements from many styles of music: European folk and classical; ragtime; jazz; Latin; and African music – creating a mix that is uniquely Brazilian and has wide appeal. Choro is experiencing a resurgence of popularity, both in Brazil and with bands throughout the world.

Split My Soul is a riveting dance-theater production that explores the conflict and integration between seven complex characters: The People’s Jester, Lady Martyre, Fizzy Head, Mystery Man, Twisted Mistress, The Kid, and Your Inevitable Death.
These characters work with and against one another, exposing their inner stories and perils as they navigate locally crafted set pieces such as stairs, textural walls, and a plethora of ropes.
Set to an original score by renowned composer Michael Wall, Split My Soul provides a cathartic visual and sonic experience to unpack mental health challenges and scenarios.
Steil believes the theatrical embodiment of internal characters and archetypes can help heal relationships, build empathy for the attributes and tendencies of ourselves and others, and shift perspectives towards the people and stories of our lives.
