Mechanics’ Hall is a landmark building in the heart of the Arts District in Portland, Maine. We are celebrated for our historic library and performance space, a cultural hub offering diverse, inspiring and accessible programs and events. Occasionally, we rent out our space for private events & celebrations. All proceeds from private rentals go toward the ongoing preservation of our building.
What is a Private Event?
Private events include but are not limited to weddings, anniversaries & memorials. Private events are further defined as those for which there is an invited list of attendees, and the event is not open to the public in any way, either free or ticketed.
(We regret that Mechanics’ Hall is unavailable for the following: fundraising events, political events, events for minors (including proms, children’s birthday parties, confirmations, bar/bat mitzvahs, religious programs.)
We have a number of different spaces available for rental depending on your event needs. Rental fees range from $200 – $6,500+ depending on which space(s) you reserve and the length of the rental.

Our Spaces
Ballroom
Designed by famed Maine architect John Calvin Stevens, the Ballroom includes high ceilings and arched sunlit windows, making it an unforgettable place for any occasion.
Capacity: 175 maximum, depending on configuration
Library
Our 2nd floor library, the 8th oldest membership library in the United States, offers historic book stacks, antique lighting, and a unique atmosphere for your private event.
Capacity: 75 cocktail style, 60 theater style
Boardroom
Wood paneled walls, a roll top desk, antique safe, and large gathering table make the Mechanics Hall Boardroom the ideal place to meet one on one with clients, host mini board retreats, take meetings and more.
Capacity: 12 seated
Classroom
This historic classroom hosted free mechanical drawing classes until the late 1980’s. Today, with its classic chalkboard, tin ceilings and bright open floor plan, The Classroom is perfect for lectures, educational programs, workshops and more.
