Peniel E. Joseph: The Sword and the Shield:

The Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Description:
In his new book, THE SWORD AND THE SHIELD: The Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. (Basic Books; March 31, 2020), acclaimed historian Peniel E. Joseph offers a paradigm-shifting dual biography of the leaders, presenting a more nuanced narrative that pushes readers to reconsider these two leaders and the era they came to define. Joseph depicts both men not as antagonists, but as revolutionaries who confronted the same problem from two different perspectives. As Joseph explains, examining their political lives next to one another provides a more complicated, but ultimately more satisfying, understanding of these men and the times they shaped.

Bio: Peniel E. Joseph is the Barbara Jordan professor of political values and ethics at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin. He has written several previous books on African American history, including Stokely: A Life. He lives in Austin, Texas.
