USEFUL KNOWLEDGE: A series dedicated to the exploration and dissemination of valuable knowledge across the vast spectrum of human experience

What draws us to specific public spaces? What makes some walks better than others? This learning group will explore and consider these qualities through readings (including excerpts from Jane Jacobs, William H. Whyte, Jan Gehl, Jenny Odell, Mike Lydon, and others) and one or two trips out into Portland’s public spaces. Participants will learn observational techniques, read about and discuss the qualities of public spaces, and finally be empowered to improve their street, block, or neighborhood. Excerpts of books and articles provided by the facilitator.

C.J. Opperthauser is the Executive Director of Friends of Congress Square Park in downtown Portland and a placemaking consultant for various public space projects in the greater Portland area. Previously, C.J. was Director of Training & Placemaking at Grow Smart RI, focusing on empowering communities to make their streets better for people rather than cars.
