Bina M. Patel invites us to confront what goes unsaid inside our institutions (and sometimes society). Drawing from her work supporting conflict transformation and equitable systems, Patel explores how to lead with courage, foster cultures of accountability, and speak difficult truths—especially when it feels risky. Free to the public, registration is required.
Presented by Mechanics’ Hall, Beyond Comfort is a three-part speaker series that brings together nationally recognized authors and changemakers who challenge the status quo and invite us into deeper reflection, courageous leadership, and transformative justice.
These events ask: What must we risk to create cultures of equity? How do we move through discomfort to action? And how can we lead, learn, and live in ways that repair rather than repeat harm?

Mechanics’ Hall & Longfellow Books present the bestselling author for a conversation on FONSECA, a brilliant, witty, heartwarming novel. Jessica Francis Kane will be joined by local writer Liz Iversen.
FONSECA is a brilliant, witty, heartwarming novel that is both a sincere homage to Penelope Fitzgerald’s legacy and an enchanting world of its own. In the vein of Colm Tóibín’s The Magician and Lily King’s Euphoria, Kane has melded the richness of historical archives with the craft of a brilliant novelist.

Ghost Apples: An Orchard of Song is a newly commissioned lyric suite for two voices, string quartet, and projected film. Join us at Mechanics’ Hall for the premiere.
Composed for Halcyon String Quartet by Nathan Davis and Maine’s Poet Laureate Julia Bouwsma, the suite features vocalists Sarah Tuttle and Aaren Rivard with film and set design by Luke Fatora.
Structured as a call and response of voices, Ghost Apples is a powerful and emotional journey through changing landscapes in the face of climate change. Mechanics’ Hall, Momentum Conservation, and PRINT present a performance of live music and words exploring terrestrial narratives
Author Laura Poppick and composer Ben Cosgrove work in different mediums, but are both deeply fascinated by landscapes and the stories held within them.
We hope you can join us for a cross-disciplinary evening of words and music exploring these terrestrial narratives: Laura will read selections from her new book, Strata: Stories from Deep Time, and Ben will play selections from his catalog of original instrumental music inspired by geography and place. Together, they will offer a layered performance that weaves together meditations on change over different timescales, movement and impermanence, and the malleability of land, water, and geology.

Monday, September 15 at 7:00 PM (doors 6:30 PM), approximately 75 minutes. There is a $5 surcharge on tickets on the day of the show.
ABOUT THE SERIES

Mechanics’ Hall presents Tero Hyväluoma and Esko Järvelä of Teho.— a Finnish power-fiddle duo that explodes musical boundaries while having roots deeply in the tradition. Improvisation also plays a big part in the duo’s sound.
The fiddlers grew up in Central Ostrobothnia – an area known for its extremely virile and rich folk music life. Their music fluently combines Finnish traditional fiddling, Norwegian Halling, Swedish Polska, Bebop, Western Swing, and contemporary folk music.
They have played together for years in various bands and projects, including one of the most well-known Finnish folk bands, Frigg, which visited Mechanics’ Hall in March 2025.

The third full-length poetry collection from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of What Kind of Woman.
Renowned poet Kate Baer returns with a bold and compassionate collection that confronts the march of time in a shifting world.
With her trademark candor and curiosity, Baer explores what it means to grow older, to release children into the wildness of their own lives, and to reclaim the ever-evolving self. Raw, luminous, and urgent, this collection channels Baer’s own journey to middle age into poems that are profoundly intimate yet resound universally, identifying the beauty, resilience, and fragility that arrive in every stage of life.
How About Now is a striking declaration of ongoing transformation and self-discovery. From the poet who has captured the heartbeat of the modern woman, this collection reaffirms Kate Baer’s place among the most vital voices of our era.
